This September, the U.S. Army Military District of Washington invites students and teachers to be inspired, entertained and informed as they take a journey through American history with the U.S. Army’s free live-action show – Spirit of America. Celebrate the spirit, strength and history of our Nation this September.
In Washington, DC, the Thursday and Friday shows at 10:30 a.m., are ideal for school field trips. In Fairfax, Va., the Friday show at 10:30 a.m., is recommended for school groups. You can request FREE tickets for your students by contacting the arena group sales office. This is a popular show and tickets tend to go quickly. Call early to request your tickets, and they will be mailed to you prior to the show date in your city. Bus drop off plans will be sent with your tickets. Doors will open at 9 a.m. for the 10:30 a.m. show.
What to Expect:
During the show Soldiers in historic uniforms reenact key moments in history. From the Revolutionary War to current operations, these reenactments feature a unique perspective of American history -- that of the citizen Soldier. The show includes battle scenes, short periods of simulated gunfire, and performances by the Army’s elite ceremonial units.
The show features Soldiers from The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” and the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), the oldest active-duty infantry unit in the Army. Elements of The Old Guard include the U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, the Caisson Platoon, the Commander-in-Chief’s Guard, the Continental Color Guard and the U.S. Army Drill Team.
Performed in the tradition of both a military review and a large-scale theatrical production, Spirit of America presents history, common values and American musical heritage.
- The Spirit of America Teacher's Guide aims to supplement textbooks with activities and assignments for grades 5-12 and provides background on the military units in the show.
- Experience first class musical elements with The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” and the U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps.
- Not only will students be entertained by this show, they will walk away with a renewed interest in American history and a deeper sense of patriotism for our country.
The Spirit of America Teacher’s Guide is prepared by the U.S. Army Military District of Washington Public Affairs Office to serve as a teaching aid for grades 5 - 12. The guide includes information about this year’s show, background information on the U.S. Army's elite ceremonial units and lesson plans to enhance your field trip. However, the information and accompanying lesson plans are of value whether or not your students attend the show.
